I am alive to write this today by the grace of God.
I’ve come close to death before. There have been times when I had an accident or an illness and could have died. But never before have I seen it up close and personal quite like I did this morning.
It all started because my family’s dog needed to be neutered. Sonic’s surgery was this morning. My husband reminded me that he needed to use my small SUV to transport Sonic to the vet. The truth is, I really don’t like driving my husband’s Mazda. It’s a stick shift. I’ve had manual transmission cars, but I’m out of practice. However, it had to be done, so I put the car in reverse and began driving to work.
I sat at the first red light waiting for it to turn green. I noticed a car behind me. When the light finally changed, I hesitated. I didn’t really have a reason to hesitate. I don’t know exactly how long, but long enough for me to think, “the guy behind me is going to be mad I hesitated.” I lifted my foot off the brake and the clutch, when at that second, a pickup truck flew through the intersection, probably going around 70 miles an hour.
It stunned me. Truth is, I’m still shaken a bit. I spoke with my parents. They’re thankful God spared me. “Praise Jesus!” they both said.
Even though the event shook me, it underscores what I’ve said before, which is that you and I will not die until it is our time. “A person’s days are determined; You have decreed the number of his months and have set limits he cannot exceed.” (Job 14:5, NIV). Also, God knows every day that we will be alive. “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” (Ps. 139-16). And worrying can’t change anything. Jesus said, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” (Luke 12:25-26).
I’m thankful I’m still here, but I can’t help but wonder why. What purpose am I to fulfill before God calls me home? Am I living how the Lord wants me to live? How have I furthered His kingdom here in a meaningful way? I pray God will give me clarity and wisdom on fulfilling my life’s purpose. In the meantime, I give Him thanks for the life He has allowed me to live thus far.
As for this morning, I am reminded of Psalm 91:11-12: “For He will command His angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.”
They were out in force today. Thank you Jesus!
