Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Leader Xi Jinping has told New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon that New Zealanders should view Beijing as an “opportunity” rather than a threat. It comes after the conservative-leaning New Zealand government has gradually returned to aligning itself with its traditional Western allies while making efforts to maintain economic ties with China. The two leaders met face-to-face over the weekend in Lima, Peru, at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting. This is in addition to praise in an editorial in the CCP newspaper China Daily for Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s “strategic autonomy. ” It seems Beijing sees growing concern among smaller nations in the Indo-Pacific over U.S. trade restrictions as an opportunity....
