Russia Cuts Off Gas Supply to Austria

Russia, a major energy supplier to Austria, has ceased exporting gas to the nation starting Nov. 16, said Russian state-owned natural gas company Gazprom. Gazprom informed Austria’s largest energy supplier, OMV, on Friday that all gas supplies will be stopped. More than 90 percent of Austria’s gas imports came from Russia as of March. OMV said it had expected a possible halt of gas supply and has shifted dependency to non-Russian sources. Fears that energy shortages will cripple the economy during the winter season were addressed by Austrian authorities.
