University of Kentucky officials did not violate federal law that requires educational institutions to provide equal athletic opportunities to men and women, a federal judge ruled on Oct. 28. The University of Kentucky did fail to provide female students with enough varsity sports teams and did not convince the court that it adequately expanded its female varsity program in response to interest among the students, U.S. District Judge Karen K. Caldwell said in a 31-page decision. The third prong of a test to determine whether violations of Title IX occur, though, was not met, she concluded.
