
Universities Facing ‘Serious Problems’ as Number of 18-Year-Olds Is Set to Decline: Report
A shrinking young population converging with declining interest in university could leave higher education (HE) in England facing “serious problems” if enrolments fall, a think tank has said. A Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) study published on Thursday said that the population of 18-year-old home fee-paying students has been steadily rising since 2019. But after hitting a peak in 2030, it is set to decline by 17 percent by 2040. However, the report said that the relationship between demand and population is not linear, with data showing that from 2010 to 2020, as the 18-year-old population declined, young entrants to university increased.
