Researchers argue that reducing childhood and adolescent obesity could yield lifetime savings of over $7 billion, yet they argue that policymakers are prioritising short-term solutions over long-term strategies. Currently, one in four children and teenagers in Australia are classified as overweight or obese. A recent study from the University of Sydney revealed that each overweight child incurs an additional lifetime cost of approximately $19,700. In comparison, those classified as obese face costs up to $46,700 compared to their healthy-weight counterparts. “We’re witnessing a concerning trend where children develop severe obesity at increasingly younger ages,” said the study’s lead author Joseph Carrello. “The earlier weight is gained, the more likely it is to persist and contribute to chronic health conditions in adulthood.”...
