US Defense Secretary Unveils $400 Million Arms Package in Surprise Ukraine Visit

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced a new $400 million arms package for Ukraine during a surprise visit to Kyiv on Oct. 21. The package includes 155mm and 105mm artillery shells, ammunition for U.S.-donated M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers, and additional Javelin anti-tank missile launcher systems. This latest aid comes less than a week after President Joe Biden announced a $425 million package providing new air defense systems and ammunition, combat vehicles, and other munitions. The surprise visit is Austin’s fourth time traveling to Ukraine as the secretary of defense. He visited Belgium last week and met with members of other North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) nations to discuss continuing support for Ukraine in its ongoing war with Russia....
