
NHS Maintenance Backlog Costs Jump to £13.8 Billion

The NHS needs almost £14 billion to cover the cost in the build up of repairs, according to the membership organisation for NHS trusts in England. Figures published on Thursday by NHS Providers show that £13.8 billion was needed to eradicate the backlog of repairs last fiscal year, up 19 percent from £11.6 billion the year before. This outstrips the total cost of running the whole NHS estate, which was £13.6 billion between April 2023 and March 2024, itself up 11 percent on the year prior. The cost of high-risk repairs—where failure to urgently address them could lead to major disruption to services or even serious injury—is £2.74 billion, up 16 percent on the year before....
