One Dead, 12 Trapped at Bottom of Colorado Gold Mine

One person is dead and 12 others are trapped over 1,000 feet underground at a former Colorado gold mine popular with tourists, authorities said Thursday. The incident occurred about 500 feet beneath the surface when an elevator descending into the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine experienced a mechanical failure. The Teller County Sheriff’s Office said online that the mine did not collapse. Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell told reporters the incident created a “severe danger for the participants.” The sheriff confirmed that one person was killed but did not disclose the victim’s identity or details about the death.
