129 Die During Failed Prison Break in Democratic Republic of Congo

At least 129 people have been killed after a failed jailbreak at Makala prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The incident at Makala, which is in the capital Kinshasa, also led to 59 people being injured. Interior minister Jacquemain Shabani Lukoo read out a statement, posted on X on Tuesday, said: “The mass escape attempt at Makala central prison resulted in the loss of life and significant material damage.” Shabani said in the early hours of Sept. 2, a number of inmates tried to break out of the prison.
