Australian CEO Proposes Imposing Infrastructure Tax on International Students

Freelancer tech CEO Matt Barrie has proposed an infrastructure levy on international students to offset the costs they impose on the Australian economy and society. Barrie, who leads a major freelance platform with tens of millions of users, alleged that Australia’s international education sector operates like a “Ponzi scheme.” He said the country is selling visas to international students who, rather than coming to study, are seeking work opportunities.
