Foreign Aid Spent in Chinese Regions Wealthier Than Areas of the UK: Study

Taxpayers’ money is being used to fund projects in areas of China, Mexico, and Malaysia wealthier than parts of the UK, a report has said. A briefing paper by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) published on Wednesday said that eight regions with GDPs per capita higher than Ards and North Down—the UK’s poorest region, with a GDP of £17,635—were receiving Official Development Assistance (ODA). The wealthiest, Ordos in China, has a GDP per capita of £27,000, which is more than the GDP of 69 regions in the UK. The IEA said that this allocation of development funds to wealthy regions means less money for poorer parts of the world, undermining efforts to tackle global poverty....
