Foreign Aid Spent in Chinese Regions Wealthier Than Areas of the UK: Study

Taxpayers’ money is being used to fund projects in areas of China, Mexico, and Malaysia wealthier than parts of the UK, a report has said. A briefing paper by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) published on Wednesday said that eight regions with GDPs per capita higher than Ards and North Down—the UK’s poorest region, with a GDP of £17,635—were receiving Official Development Assistance (ODA). The wealthiest, Ordos in China, has a GDP per capita of £27,000, which is more than the GDP of 69 regions in the UK.
