Quebec to Allow Advance Requests for MAID This Fall, Without Waiting for Feds to Change Law

Quebec is set beginning this fall to allow advance requests for medical assistance in dying (MAID) from certain patients before their condition worsens and prevents them from being able to give consent. “We will be ready, and we will move forward. What we want is for the federal government to change the Criminal Code, but if they don’t, we are working on our options,” Léa Fortin, spokesperson for Seniors Minister Sonia Bélanger, told The Canadian Press, noting that more details will be announced in the fall. Quebec adopted Bill 11, an act to amend the province’s end-of-life care law regarding MAID eligibility, in June 2023.
