DEERPARK, N.Y.—Two hours from Manhattan, deep in the rolling hills, a 400-acre performing arts campus rewinds the clock thousands of years to China’s ancient Tang Dynasty. Artists rise for a new day of stretching, jumping, and perfecting their techniques. They run laps around the lake, finishing as golden rays hit the temple roofs.
