The Environment Agency has launched an investigation into a company after a major incident was declared following a toxic spill in a canal in the West Midlands. The spillage occurred in the early hours of the morning on Monday in the area of Walsall canal, with the local council advising members of the public to avoid affected areas of the waterway and towpaths. The Environment Agency confirmed on Wednesday it was undertaking detailed testing of the water for sodium cyanide and other chemicals, saying its priority was to assess the impact on the environment and wildlife.
