
Illegal Migration to Italy by Sea Drops by 62 Percent
Illegal immigration via sea to Italy has dropped by 62.4 percent this year, according to official figures released on Tuesday. A total of 37,031 illegal immigrants arrived by boat from across the Mediterranean as of Aug. 12 this year compared to 98,535 at the same point in 2023. Last year had particularly high levels of illegal arrivals into Italy, with the island of Lampedusa the hardest hit of all landing sites. At one point politicians compared the arrivals on the island to an invasion after 120 boats carrying a total of around 7,000 migrants, equivalent to Lampedusa’s total population, arrived on a single September day. According to Italian outlet il Giornale, some in Italy are attributing the drop in arrivals to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s plan to hold some migrants who arrive on the country’s shores in centers in Albania....
