Hamas Names Gaza Chief to Replace Recently Killed Top Leader

Hamas has picked Yahya Sinwar, the terrorist group’s top official in Gaza, to lead its highest decision-making body. The decision was announced Aug. 6, seven days after Sinwar’s predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, died in a targeted explosion while at a guest house in the Iranian capital of Tehran. “The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas announces the selection of Commander Yahya Sinwar as the head of the political bureau of the movement, succeeding the martyr Commander Ismail Haniyeh, may Allah have mercy on him,” the group said in a statement, according to a translation by Reuters. Sinwar, 61, has been leading Hamas in the Gaza Strip since 2017.
