Australian Online Regulator Concerned About ‘Terrorist and Extremist’ Material on Social Media

Australia’s eSafety Commissioner has called for more regulation due to concerns about the spread of “terrorist and extremist” material on social media. This came after Australia’s terrorism alert level was raised from possible to probable amid online radicalisation and tension in the Middle East. Julie Inman Grant, who heads the Australian eSafety office, which claims to be the world’s first government agency dedicated to online safety, has expressed “very real concerns” about violent extremists weaponising technology. This includes the misuse of live-streaming, algorithms, and recommender systems. “We are also concerned by reports that terrorists and violent extremists are moving to capitalise on the emergence of generative AI and are experimenting with ways this new technology can be misused to stoke division and cause harm,” eSafety said in a statement....
