Wandsworth Prison Unable to Account for Inmates’ Whereabouts, Say Inspectors

Staff at Wandsworth prison were unable to account for the whereabouts of prisoners during the day seven months after an inmate allegedly escaped, an inspection report revealed on Tuesday. The report by the His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) said Wandsworth was “symbolic of the problems that characterise what is worst about the English prison system.” As a result of the “catastrophic” inspection in May, the HMIP issued then-Justice Secretary Alex Chalk with a notification demanding urgent improvements. Chalk lost his job and his seat in July’s general election and was replaced by Shabana Mahmood. On Tuesday the HMIP published the full report into the May inspection which revealed high rates of self-harm, dangerous levels of violence, and nearly half of prisoners taking drugs.
