
Woman in 90s Dies, 60 Cases of Legionnaires’ Disease in Victoria
More than 60 cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been identified in Victoria, with one woman in her 90s dying after falling ill on July 30. Legionnaires’ disease is a form of pneumonia caused by the Legionella pneumophila bacteria, which can be found in water systems, including lakes, rivers, cooling towers, plumbing systems, and hot water tanks and heaters. The Victorian Department of Health has confirmed 60 cases and 10 suspected cases to date, predominantly affecting adults over 40. Chief Health Officer Dr. Clare Looker said approximately 59 of the confirmed cases and seven of the suspected cases have been taken to hospital. “Very sadly, one person, a lady in her 90s, has died after contracting Legionnaires’ disease. This woman became ill on Tuesday evening, presented to hospital and died shortly after, and our condolences are with her family,” Dr. Looker told reporters....
