Germany Accuses China of Cyberattack on Government Agency

German officials said Wednesday that the country’s intelligence services have determined that Chinese state-sponsored hackers were responsible for a “severe” cyberattack on a federal agency in 2021 for the purpose of espionage. The Chinese cyberattack targeted Germany’s federal cartography agency (BKG), which plays a key role for many government and private entities, including in the critical infrastructure sector, according to a July 31 statement from the German Ministry of the Interior.
