Former Minister Cotler Encouraged Liberal MP Housefather to Sit as Independent

Former Liberal MP and cabinet minister Irwin Cotler said he suggested that MP Anthony Housefather resign from the party’s caucus to sit as an independent, as anger toward the Liberals from the Jewish population of his riding of Mount Royal would make the upcoming electoral race difficult. “I don’t think that [Housefather] should be punished because of the desire to punish the Liberal party, which was part of the dynamic in Toronto–St Paul’s,” Cotler said in an interview with the National Post.  “I understand why there is anger towards the Liberals, but I don’t think he should end up being victimized for it.
