
Ofgem Want Flexible Tariffs to Handle Unpredictable Wind and Solar

The UK’s energy regulator is exploring measures to “enhance flexibility” in energy usage owing to the growing reliance on intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. This shift is seen as essential as the demand for electricity is expected to rise by 50 percent by 2035, driven by the increasing use of electric vehicles (EVs) and heat pumps. On Monday Ofgem claimed that flexible domestic energy consumption means that consumers will be able to take advantage of a lower tariff to charge their EV battery when wind is generating an abundance of electricity. It said that it has hired Elexon, a company that helps manage and balance the UK’s electricity market, to act as market facilitator for local energy flexibility....
