Former California Prison Guard Faces New Charges of Sexual Assault on Inmates

A former California correctional officer has been charged with three new allegations of sexual assault related to an original 12-count indictment, prosecutors announced last week. Daryl Wayne Smith, 55, was indicted in 2023 on a dozen counts alleging he engaged in illegal sexual acts with three female inmates while employed at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin—about 40 minutes southeast of Oakland. The latest indictment issued July 25 identifies two additional victims and adds two counts of sexual abuse and a third count of a federal civil rights violation. Mr. Smith has now been charged with six counts of sexual abuse of a ward, one count of aggravated sexual abuse, seven counts of abusive sexual contact, and one count of deprivation of rights, according to prosecutors....
