
FTC Launches Probe Into Surveillance Pricing That Targets Individuals

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is looking into how firms are using surveillance pricing to charge different prices for different customers. Surveillance pricing involves advanced algorithms, AI, and other tech combined with consumers’ personal data such as credit history, location, and browsing history to set prices for individuals. The FTC issued orders to eight companies, seeking information on surveillance pricing, according to a July 23 press release. “Firms that harvest Americans’ personal data can put people’s privacy at risk.
