Western Australian (WA) Senator Fatima Payman has downplayed her involvement with the recently announced Muslim Vote movement in Australia, as she announced on July 4 that she would quit Labor to become an independent sitting on the crossbench. The move means Labor will need to lobby for more support from non-party senators including the Greens. The Muslim Vote movement has vowed to challenge key Labor seats by backing independent Muslim candidates to force the party into minority government.
