
Giant Underground Salt Caverns for Hydrogen Storage Planned Under Naval Base in Dorset

A company is planning to build giant underground salt caverns for hydrogen storage under a former naval base in Dorset. The onshore fossil fuel extraction company UK Oil and Gas (UKOG) wants to build 14 underground salt cavern storage units that will sit beneath the land, with a capacity of 43 billion square feet. Each will be lozenge shaped with a height and width of 90 to 100 metres. The potential site at Portland Port has a history dating back to its establishment as a naval base by Henry VIII in the 16th century and is one of the few ports within the UK able to host nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Navy....
