
Homeless Advocates Divided After Supreme Court Upholds Ban on Public Camping

Advocates for the homeless expressed divergent reactions to a June 28 Supreme Court ruling that upheld an Oregon city’s ban on public camping targeting homeless encampments. The high court, in a 6–3 vote, overturned a Ninth Circuit decision that had blocked enforcement of the local ordinance. In doing so, the majority found that the law banning homeless camping does not constitute “cruel and unusual punishment” prohibited by the Eighth Amendment.
