
Australia Needs 12 Nuclear Submarines, Not 8: Labor MP

Former soldier and now-federal MP Luke Gosling says Australia should increase its nuclear-powered submarine fleet to 12 vessels, instead of stopping at the planned eight under the AUKUS deal. The tri-nation AUKUS deal was unveiled in 2021 and will see the United States and the UK arm Australia with nuclear-powered submarines to counter Beijing’s military build-up in the region. After two years of deliberation, the final plan, revealed in late 2023, would see the Royal Australian Navy first buy three to five U.S. Virginia-class submarines in the 2030s following congressional approval. Five more new submarines will be acquired in conjunction with the UK, the SSN-AUKUS. SSN is the classification for nuclear-powered submarines....
