
US Says Partnership With Vietnam Not Conditional on Severing Ties With China, Russia
U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on June 20 that the United States’ improved relations with Vietnam do not require Vietnam to sever ties with China or Russia. The statement was made after Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Hanoi on June 19 for a two-day state visit. Mr. Putin met with the communist state’s President To Lam and the communist party’s leader Nguyen Phu Trong. The two countries signed 11 agreements on issue ranging from oil and gas to nuclear science. Asked at a news conference in Atlanta if the new cooperation between Moscow and Hanoi raised concerns for the United States, Ms. Yellen said, “Vietnam has a policy and strategy of working collaboratively with many different countries, and it is not a condition of our partnership that they sever their ties to Russia or to China.”...
