A North Carolina appeals court has thrown out a woman’s involuntary manslaughter conviction in connection with the death of a teenager who fatally shot himself using an unsecured gun he handled while visiting her home. State law makes it a misdemeanor offense for a gun owner to store or leave a gun “in a condition that the firearm can be discharged” and is accessible to an unsupervised child.
