Chinese Researchers Sought to Use UK Partenership to Develop Possible AI Tools for Military

Researchers at a state-owned Chinese firm have sought to use a partnership with a British university to develop AI tools with potential military use, research has found. An email from the Jiangsu Automation Research Institute (JARI)—a key part of China’s military industrial complex—stated that it was hoping to work with Imperial College London to develop tools with potential applications in military bases, according to research published on Sunday. UK-China Transparency (UKCT), the charity that conducted the research, said its analysis suggests the effect of the now-collapsed partnership “would have been to link top British expertise and resources in to China’s national military marine combat drone research programmes, possibly without the knowledge of the British scientists.”...
