
Sending Canadian Ship to Cuba Alongside Russian Vessels a Strategic Move: Defence Minister
National Defence Minister Bill Blair has said that the decision to send a Canadian ship to Cuba to dock alongside a Russian fleet was a “carefully” planned move to increase its presence in the region. “We’ve made the smart choice to boost our naval presence in the region this week,” reads a statement from the Department of Defence (DND) on June 16. “We believe that this marked an especially important time to show a Canadian presence.” On June 12, four Russian naval vessels arrived in Cuba for military drills, at the same time as Moscow’s tensions with the United States and its allies continued to rise over the Ukraine War. While the vessels were anchored just 145 km from the U.S. state of Florida, the Pentagon said the exercises “don’t pose a threat to the United States.”...
