
‘Significant Surge’ in Mosquitoes Carrying West Nile Virus Sparks Concern in Nevada

Health officials in Southern Nevada are urging residents to protect themselves from mosquito bites as they report the region is experiencing the highest level of mosquito activity in known history, and it’s happening much earlier in the season than usual. As of June 6, 91 pools, comprising 3,081 mosquitoes from 16 ZIP codes, have tested positive for the West Nile virus, the Southern Nevada Health District said in a statement on June 10. The agency noted that two pools, comprising 46 mosquitoes from two ZIP codes, have also tested positive for the virus that causes Saint Louis encephalitis—a rare mosquito-borne disease and member of the flavivirus genus....
