One Million Egg-Laying Hens to Be Euthanised in Bid to Control Bird Flu

Agriculture Minister Murray Watt has reassured Australians that the government has control of the bird flu situation. Despite major supermarket giant Coles introducing a temporary limit of two egg cartons per customer, the minister said there was no reason to expect a national shortage. The highly pathogenic strain of Avian influenza, H7N3, has been detected at five poultry farms in the state of Victoria. Agriculture Victoria has previously reassured Victorians egg and poultry products from supermarkets do not pose a risk and are safe to consume.
