Columbia University Settles Lawsuit With Jewish Student, Promising Extra Safety Measures

Columbia University has settled a federal lawsuit brought by a Jewish student alleging the Ivy League school couldn’t provide a safe educational environment amid the pro-Palestinian protests on campus. As part of the settlement, reached on June 4, the university officials promised to appoint a “safe passage liaison,” who will coordinate security escorts upon students’ request at all hours of the day, and will have the authority to open alternative entrances and exits for students receiving security escorts. The service will be available until at least Dec. 31. Columbia also agreed to consider academic accommodations for students who missed key assignment deadlines or exams because of protest-related campus closures.
