Australia Introduces Laws Against AI-Generated Deepfakes

The sharing of non-consensual “deepfake” sexually explicit material is now illegal in Australia. It’s a move that has been welcomed by the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA), which say the specific laws will strike the right balance between targeting the dangers of artificial intelligence (AI) without hindering the development of AI in Australia. The Criminal Code Amendment (Deepfake Sexual Material) Bill 2024 will impose serious criminal penalties on those who share sexually explicit material without consent. This includes material that is digitally created using artificial intelligence or other technology.
