New York City experienced an unprecedented surge in serious crime last year, according to internal NYPD data, an apparent contradiction of Mayor Eric Adams’s continued claims that “crime is down” in the city. In 2023 the city was hit with a historic spike in assaults, which numbered 27,591, an increase of 6.7 percent and the highest since the city first began tracking the data, according to the police department’s rolling report first obtained by The New York Post. Further, the seven major felony offenses—murder, rape, robbery, assault, car thefts, grand larceny, and burglary—spiked to 127,111 in 2023, marking the highest totals since 2006, according to the police data....
