
Strong Earthquake Shakes Taiwan, Damaging Buildings and Causing Tsunami
A powerful earthquake shook the entire island of Taiwan on Wednesday morning local time, causing buildings to collapse in a southern city and generating a tsunami that reached the southern Japanese islands. The quake, with a magnitude ranging from 7.2 according to Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency to 7.4 as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey, struck at 7:58 a.m. local time, about 11 miles (18 kilometers) south-southwest of Hualien. It was approximately 21 miles (35 kilometers) deep. In Hualien, a five-story building sustained heavy damage, with its first floor collapsing and the rest of the structure leaning at a 45-degree angle.
