Report Recommends Removal of Sexual Discrimination at Religious Schools

A report by the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) has recommended a section of the Sexual Discrimination Act be removed so that the rights of LGBTQI+ students and staff working at religious schools can be better protected. “The overall effect of implementing (this recommendation) would be to narrow the circumstances in which it would be lawful to discriminate against students or staff at religious educational institutions, on the basis of attributes protected under the Sex Discrimination Act,” the report stated. Meanwhile, the Australian Association of Christian Schools (AACS) has criticised the report, saying the proposed changes to remove the right of faith-based schools to employ staff who share their beliefs are “a direct attack on faith and freedom of belief in Australia.”...
