
Republicans Push for Senate to Advance House-Passed Laken Riley Act
Senate Republicans announced on March 21 a plan to push for the Laken Riley Act to be added to a $1.2 trillion government funding package that the upper chamber is expected to consider on Friday to avert a shutdown. Laken Riley was a 22-year-old Georgia nursing student who was abducted and killed on Feb. 22, allegedly by an illegal immigrant, despite the suspect having been previously apprehended by law enforcement in multiple states for several offenses. The bill was initially introduced in the Senate on March 13 by Sens. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.). and Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.). This after 32 House Republicans signed on to the Laken Riley Act H.R. 7511, which is the House companion act, and was originally introduced by Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.)....
