Housing Act Not Focused on Building Homes in Canada

An act to create a new housing department will not lead to more homes in Canada, federal officials told a recent House of Commons finance committee meeting. The committee was discussing parts of Bill 59, An Act to Implement Certain Provisions of the Fall Economic Statement, on March 19. If passed, division 11 of the bill, called the Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities Act, would be enacted, establishing the Department of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities. This department would be responsible for “various responsibilities relating to housing and the reduction and prevention of homelessness,” according to the bill.
