
Virginia Becomes Second State to Ban Legacy Admissions

Virginia became the second state to ban legacy admissions at public colleges after Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed a bill that cleared the state legislature with overwhelming bipartisan support. The legislation passed the Virginia Senate by unanimous consent and also received zero opposition in the House of Delegates. Mr. Youngkin signed it on March 8, the day before the General Assembly concluded its 2024 regular session. “No public institution of higher education shall provide any manner of preferential treatment in the admissions decision to any student applicant on the basis of such student’s legacy status or such student’s familial relationship to any donor to such institution,” the bill reads....
