
‘Greedy Work’ Getting in the Way of Closing the Gender Pay Gap: Minister
BRISBANE, Australia—Competition Minister Andrew Leigh says the gender pay gap can be further cut if the impact of “greedy jobs” in Australia can be reduced. The term, coined by Harvard University Professor Claudia Goldin, refers to high-paying professions where workers get paid more when they work a greater number of hours than the usual schedule. Think corporate bankers, law firm partners, or high-level managers who work late into the night burning the midnight oil, or cutting short their weekends to work on a deal. Professor Goldin’s research said “greedy jobs” were one reason why the gender pay gap in some lucrative professions was so hard to close, with women often choosing not to sacrifice after-hours periods or weekends for their jobs.
