
Drones Could Be Used as First Responders If Pilot Scheme Successful
A pilot scheme using drones as first responders could be rolled out across the country if a pilot scheme in Norfolk is successful. During his Budget speech on Wednesday, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said police officers across the country wasted around eight hours a week on unnecessary attendance at 999 calls and he pledged £230 million on “money-saving technology which speeds up police response times,” including using drones as first responders. Police forces in England and Wales already operate 400 drones but they can only be flown within the operator’s line of sight and are of limited use. In November the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) unveiled plans to test the remote-controlled drones out in Norfolk and if Project Eagle X is successful the aim is for them to send back early information from accidents and other incidents....
