
Alcohol-Related Deaths Increase to Nearly 500 per Day During COVID-19 Pandemic: CDC
Deaths associated with excessive alcohol consumption surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, averaging around 488 deaths per day, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The average number of alcohol-related deaths increased by 29 percent, from around 137,927 during 2016–2017 to around 178,307 deaths in 2020–2021, the CDC stated in a report published on Feb. 29. The rise in alcohol-related deaths hit all age groups during the five-year period, although the percentage increase in the number of deaths was larger among women (35 percent) than for men (27 percent). “Deaths from causes fully attributable to alcohol use have increased during the past 2 decades in the United States, particularly from 2019 to 2020, concurrent with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic,” it stated....
