California Opens First Transgender Voting Center

Los Angeles County opened the nation’s first transgender voting center Feb. 29. Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis celebrated the opening with local leaders at the Connie Normal Transgender Empowerment Center. “By providing a safe and affirming space for the transgender community to exercise their fundamental right to vote, we are breaking down barriers and ensuring every Californian has equal access to the ballot box,” Ms. Kounalakis said in a press release. The county has not had any reports of incidents involving transgender voters in the past, according to Mike Sanchez, a spokesman for the county’s registrar.
