
Tasmanian Voters, Not the Doctor’s Union, Will Elect or Reject Sladden
Commentary Tasmania goes to early polls on March 23. The centre-right Liberal Party has selected Dr. Julie Sladden, a registered general practitioner and emergency medicine doctor since 1997, to contest the northern electorate of Bass. The Australian Medical Association (AMA) wants her deselected. AMA Tasmania vice president, Dr. Annette Barratt, says Dr. Sladden’s candidacy is “untenable.” Premier Jeremy Rockliff is standing by her. Dr. Sladden closed her practice in 2021 because of strong objections to the COVID-19 vaccine. Writing in the Spectator Australia in 2022, she explained that as a well-travelled doctor, she was more vaccinated than most people.
