
EU Proposes Law to Certify and Monitor Carbon Removal Activities

Two legislative bodies of the European Union (EU) reached an agreement on Tuesday over new rules for the voluntary certification, registration, and monitoring of carbon removals within the EU. The European Council and the European Parliament agreed to define and regulate permanent carbon removals, carbon farming, and carbon storage in products to address climate change, according to a statement from the council. According to the resolution on sustainable carbon cycles, which was adopted in April 2023 by the European Parliament, carbon removals “must play a growing role in achieving EU climate neutrality by 2050.” This is to “balance out emissions that cannot be eliminated,” according to the parliament’s statement....
