Waymo Issues Software Recall After 2 Vehicles Hit Towed Pickup Truck

Waymo, an autonomous ride-hail service, issued a voluntary recall on Tuesday for its self-driving software after two of its robotaxis hit the same pickup truck being towed in Phoenix, Arizona, in December 2023. Waymo chief safety officer Mauricio Pena said the company’s entire fleet was updated with new software to address “this rare issue” and that its ride-hailing service was not interrupted by the update. The recall was issued after one of the robotaxis collided with a backward-facing pickup truck in Phoenix on Dec. 11, 2023, according to a Feb. 13 blog post.
